There are different distillation methods to get the most purified water at your own home place but we must have a proper understand what does actually mean by distilled water. Distillation is a procedure through which we get filtered and purified water. It results in balanced pH level H2O. This process involves different steps through which water has to go through to get purified. These steps involve boiling of water which converts the water into vapors. Collection of the water vapors and then the condensation procedure in which you allow the water vapors to be cooled down so that they should be converted into liquid form. Now finally you may collect water which is available in liquid form.

How to distill water at home?

There are several methods to get distilled water at home and the most important and commonly used method is given below.

Distillation of Water by using a Stove

You can use a stove for boiling of water. You need a large water container (preferably convex shape) which ideally should be of five plus gallons. After filling the pot half (or amount of water you need to distill), put the water container on stove and turn it on with the temperature which should be sufficient to boil the water slowly. Place a bowl inside the water container and cover the container with a lid exposing the curved surface inwards. Now take some ice cubes and put them on the lid.

With rising temperature water will be converted into steam which will be collected on the convex surface of lid and the cooling effects of ice cubes will turn the vapors back into liquid water. Water droplets will be running down into the bowl which is placed inside the container. This is one of the easiest distillation methods to get distilled water.

When you boil water, it is converted into steam and by cooling this steam can be converted back into water is the condensation process. This entire procedure is called distillation and it is very useful method to remove the impurities among the water. Natural water is contaminated with lots of dissolved minerals and various micro organisms. By boiling the water, you actually kill the micro organisms. The remaining water is simply nothing more than the combination of hydrogen and oxygen which is pure water without any contaminants, minerals or extra gases. pH level of distilled water reaches almost to 7.

We learn through the distillation process that elements found in water which causes contamination are heavier than molecules of water. These elements are mostly the part solid material. When water is heated in some distiller, solid materials which have been dissolved in water will still remain in the solid form but water will be converted into steam. Steam is much lighter than these contaminants; hence it will be easy to separate those particles from water through distillation process. Once the water is completely converted into steam, it will be taken out for the process of condensation. This is all about “what is distilled water” and how to obtain it.

Many people ask “can you drink distilled water”, yes of course. It is good to drink but it may give you bland taste. It is tasteless because through distillation you have already removed those particles which develop the original flavor of the natural water. Hence distilled water is pretty safe to drink but it is used mostly while conducting any research in laboratories because for certain researches water purity is more than essential. If natural water is used in the laboratories for the research, it may cause some damages or you may not get the appropriate and required results through your research.
